Every day, the woman would remind you not to go to the forest after dark. You’d set home after an hour and join the couple for breakfast before exploring the serene town and the forest that looked like it’d never been touched by anyone. The crisp air was enough to make you chipper for the rest of the day, happy to take in the beauty of the trees around you. So every morning, before the old couple woke up for breakfast, you would set out and take a trek through the woods that surrounded the village. Her constant anxiety over you going by yourself made you a little nervous but you weren’t going to spend your vacation not doing the one thing you had set out to do. The older woman who you were staying with was incredibly kind, something you appreciated, but you wished she wouldn’t warn you about the forest so much. Cell phones didn’t work very well out here. Luckily, they were patient enough to deal with your looking through your translation book. It was half of what a hotel would have cost you and the residents were as sweet as they could be with the bare minimum Japanese you had managed to learn. You had managed to make a deal with one of the residents to let you stay in a room in their home during your visit. Most people would have stayed in Tokyo or something like that but you were determined to enjoy the landscapes that Japan had to offer. It was what brought you to Shirakawa-gō, a secluded village that was surrounded by Gokayama park. Plus, acting as a tourist there would give a small boost to the areas where hardly anyone lived anymore. Especially with the nature that was kept well maintained outside the main part of the country. Traveling to Japan has been a dream of yours for a long time, sprouting from a weeb desire to be in the place where your favorite anime was created and grew into a genuine interest in the beauty of the land.
